Writing

Intent

At our school, we believe that writing is a vital skill for learning, expression, and creativity. Our intent is to provide pupils with a rich and inspiring writing curriculum that equips them with the skills, confidence, and passion to become fluent, imaginative, and articulate writers. We follow The Write Stuff programme, which places the sentence at the heart of writing. By focusing on sentences as the fundamental building blocks of composition, pupils learn to craft writing with precision, purpose, and flair. Through exposure to high-quality literature, children are inspired to explore language deeply and to develop a love of writing.

Implementation

We deliver writing through The Write Stuff approach, which uses the strategy of sentence stacking. Each lesson revolves around the modelling and crafting of individual sentences, where teachers demonstrate grammar, vocabulary, and authorial decision-making in context. This explicit modelling ensures that pupils understand how to structure their writing effectively while making creative and purposeful choices as authors. Units of work are based on carefully selected, high-quality texts that are expertly pitched to support both the study of the craft of writing and the creation of high-quality outcomes. The programme also develops children’s vocabulary and oracy, ensuring that spoken language and writing are closely linked. Teachers ensure progression by building on prior learning, strengthening writing skills, and deepening understanding of a wide range of genres, including poetry, narrative, non-fiction, and playscripts.

Impact

As a result of this approach, pupils at our school develop into confident, capable, and enthusiastic writers. They are able to use rich vocabulary, varied sentence structures, and authorial techniques to express themselves with accuracy and creativity. Our pupils understand that writing is a process of making purposeful choices, and they are able to apply their skills across the curriculum.
