British Values at St Thomas More
At St Thomas More, we believe that our Catholic faith and British Values work hand in hand. Through our values of Dignity, Compassion and Perseverance, we help children develop the knowledge, understanding and character needed to become active, responsible citizens who contribute positively to modern Britain.
We actively promote the fundamental British Values of:
- Democracy
- The Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
These values are not taught in isolation. They are lived out through daily school life, our curriculum, our relationships and the opportunities we provide for children to contribute to our community.
Democracy
Children are encouraged to share their views and take an active role in shaping school life. Through School Council, Friends in Faith, Laudato Si, OPAL Guardians and other leadership opportunities, pupils learn that their voices matter and that they can make a positive difference.
The Rule of Law
Children learn that rules and laws exist to keep people safe, protect rights and help communities flourish. Our therapeutic approach to behaviour helps children understand both responsibility and accountability, while learning how to repair relationships when mistakes are made.
Individual Liberty
We encourage children to make choices, develop independence and take increasing responsibility for their actions. Through PSHE, Relationships Education, Online Safety and the wider curriculum, pupils learn how to exercise their freedoms safely and responsibly.
Mutual Respect
Respect is central to life at St Thomas More. We teach children that every person possesses inherent dignity and should be treated with kindness, fairness and consideration. Positive relationships between children, staff and families help create a community where everyone feels valued.
Tolerance and Understanding
As a Catholic school, we celebrate both our own faith and the diversity of the world around us. Through Religious Education, assemblies, visitors, curriculum learning and daily interactions, children develop an understanding of different faiths, cultures and beliefs. We encourage pupils to recognise what unites us while respecting our differences.
Living Out Our Values
Children at St Thomas More learn that being a good citizen means serving others, standing up for what is right and contributing positively to their community. Through charitable work, leadership opportunities, educational visits, prayer, worship and Catholic Social Teaching, pupils learn how they can make a difference in the world around them.
