MFL
At St Thomas More School, we learn French in Key Stage 2 for our Modern Foreign Language.
Intent
At St Thomas More, our French curriculum aims to inspire curiosity, confidence and enjoyment in language learning. We want pupils to develop the foundations of oracy, literacy and cultural understanding, enabling them to communicate simple ideas clearly and accurately in French. Learning a language supports pupils’ wider cognitive development, strengthens listening and reading skills, and nurtures openness to other cultures, helping children grow as respectful, outward-looking global citizens in line with our Catholic values.
Implementation
French is taught weekly from Key Stage 2 using a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum, which where possible ties closely with topics in other areas of our curriculum. Our scheme is called 'Language Angels'. The teaching of vocabulary, grammar and sentence structures are designed to help pupils to move from single words to short phrases, sentences and simple spoken interactions. Lessons are inclusive, engaging and well supported through visual prompts, repetition and structured scaffolding, ensuring all pupils can succeed.
Impact
By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are confident language learners who can listen, speak, read and write simple French with increasing accuracy and independence. They can express opinions, ask and answer questions, describe people, places and everyday experiences, and apply language-learning strategies to unfamiliar texts. This prepares them well for secondary education and supports their development as thoughtful, articulate and globally aware learners.
