Pupil Leadership

At St Thomas More Catholic Primary School, we believe that every child has the potential to be a leader. Our pupil leadership roles give children the opportunity to serve others, contribute to school life and make a positive difference to our community.

Through our Servant Leadership Programme, pupils in Years 3–6 are encouraged to take on responsibilities that help them grow in confidence, independence and compassion. These roles support our Catholic ethos by helping children understand that leadership is not just about being in charge, but about serving others with kindness, respect and commitment.

Our Pupil Leadership Roles

Service Stewards

Our Service Stewards support the smooth running of the school day by helping the Office Team with daily organisation and communication.

Their responsibilities include:

  • sorting and distributing letters and leaflets

  • helping the Office Team with organisation

  • keeping the office area tidy and welcoming for visitors

  • carrying out tasks sensibly and reliably

This role is ideal for pupils who are organised, trustworthy, efficient and enjoy helping others behind the scenes.

OPAL Guardians

Our OPAL Guardians help make playtimes active, inclusive and enjoyable for everyone. They support younger or less confident pupils, encourage teamwork and help others to play fairly.

Their responsibilities include:

  • leading OPAL games and activities

  • helping to set up and tidy away resources

  • encouraging teamwork, fairness and inclusion

  • helping younger pupils join in and make friends

  • modelling respectful behaviour

  • helping to resolve small conflicts peacefully

This role is ideal for pupils who are energetic, enthusiastic, kind and enjoy outdoor play.

Laudato Si’ Squad

Our Laudato Si’ Squad helps our school care for God’s creation. They promote sustainability, encourage others to look after our environment and support practical actions around school.

Their responsibilities include:

  • promoting care for God’s creation

  • turning off lights, screens and projectors when not in use

  • leading recycling and energy-saving initiatives

  • monitoring water use and reminding others not to waste resources

  • helping to care for the school garden and outdoor spaces

  • planning events such as Earth Day and Laudato Si’ Week

This role is ideal for pupils who are passionate about the environment, responsible, caring and enjoy encouraging others to live sustainably.

Why Pupil Leadership Matters

Pupil leadership helps children to develop important life skills, including communication, teamwork, responsibility, problem-solving and service. It gives pupils a voice and helps them understand that they can make a meaningful contribution to their school community.

By taking on leadership roles, our pupils learn to:

  • serve others with kindness and respect

  • take responsibility for their actions

  • work as part of a team

  • support younger pupils

  • care for our school environment

  • show confidence and initiative

  • live out our Catholic values in practical ways

Our pupil leaders are important role models across the school. They help make St Thomas More a welcoming, inclusive and caring place for everyone.
